Knot So Simple - CBS News Video

Earlier this week, one of my blog readers asked me about making a knotted lanyard after seeing a CBS Sunday Morning story about knots, by correspondent Serena Altschul . I googled for the story, but didn't find the video link for it until today. And of course I found it mentioned on the Knot Heads World Wide website forums. Enjoy.

CBS News video link. I would embed the video, but since the video is set to autoplay when the page loads, which I know some folks find annoying, I've just provided the link to the page.

Sorry to bother you, but I've just started working with shock cord, and was wondering what you thought is the best way to seal the ends of the cord at the end of a project? Taking a lighter to it doesn't seem to work very well..

Thanks!

I've used a lighter with the shock cord and a black Sharpie to color the white core if still visible. You might also try using a soldering iron or wood burning tool on the ends.

When you use a lighter, does it melt/seal the white rubber component of the cord as well, or just the outer nylon layer? Am having a bit of trouble with the inner rubber bits.

The nylon outer sheath of the shock cord melts faster than the inner white rubber cord core, so I just hit the sheath with the lighter to keep the outer sheath ends from fraying.

You can try to pull the outer sheath back to expose some of the inner core to be trimmed off, then slide the outer sheath back and quick melt the ends to hide the core. That may or may not work depending on the cord you have, as the outer sheath is usually snug against the inner rubber core.
