Manny, a fellow knot tying friend out in California, sent me a photo of a turks head knot that he tied, being used as a jug/bottle sling. So I gave it a try.
The knot is a simple 3 Lead 5 Bight turks head knot, tied from a doubled up single strand of paracord. You start from the center, treating the cords as one, making a single pass. When you get back around to the starting bight, you run the paracord ends through the center of the bight you started with. Work the slack out of the knot from the starting point to tighten the knot up around the bottle neck, and when you pull on the end cords, you'll find it does hold on tight.
I haven't yet tested it out over time with use, but it does look like a usable alternative to a regular jug/bottle sling knot. I used a 10 foot length of paracord for enough extra to make an adjustable shoulder strap with the ends knotted together.
*Manny suggested using a cord lock on the strands, slid up against the knot to further secure it.

That's a very clever way to transition out of a Turks Head knot. Bravo Zulu!
That's pretty cool. I put a larger Turk's head around a Diamond Willow walking stick with a lanyard knot in the middle to create a hanging place for "totems"... this would have been easier :)
You wouldn't need a cord lock against the turkshead if you pass the ends thru the loop, twist the loop and pass the ends thru again. This doubles the turns around the cord and it resists slipping loose.
Stormdrane,
I am just getting started tying knots Your site is very helpful. What are the 2 knots you tied on the water bottle sling that slide, to make the loop longer/shorted? How do you tie it?
Thanks.
Guy
The knots are just doubled overhand knots, each tied around the other cord, which hold well enough and still allow adjustment.
Storm,
GREAT WORK!!
I was wondering if I could use images from your site to teach some scout leaders how to do this for water bottles for their scouts.
Thanks again for all the hard work.
Sure, you may share the images to help teach the scout leaders. I tied a double fisherman's bend for the adjustable part of the shoulder/carry cord.
When I was walking today with my SIGG water bottle I was wondering how I could carry it without having to hold it the whole time I am walking. This is a great idea. Who would have thought you could use some string with groovy knots as opposed to some expensive water bottle holder!
I would have never thought of that! I'll have to try that next time.
