ID badge lanyard made with 550 paracord in neon(toxic) green for the core with black nylon cord braided over it, a swivel hook, and a break-away lanyard connector for safety. A 3 peg/nail knitting spool was used for the braid, the pegs/nails are spaced about 1" apart for the smaller diameter black nylon cord to make a loose braid where the underlying paracord can be seen thru it.
I have some of those break away connectors but have not found a good way to attach them. How are they connected to the cord?

I just put the end of the cord thru each end of the connectors and tied a knot so that it can't slide back out the hole.

You loop the cords thru the hook before you start the snake knot. Once you've run the cords thru the hook, start making the snake knot back towards the lanyard around the cords as a core for the snake knot.

ReplyDeleteI was wondering how you did all of this. Did you have to do 2 different strands with 2 ends at the break away connectors and the other 2 ends at the hook? Or did you just do 1 strand with the loop under the snake knot? Im looking forward to making something like this. Thanks!
With the break-away connector, I used two separate strands of paracord, then did the black over them with the spool knit in equal lengths, and brought the ends together, looping them around the clip, and making the snake knot back around the paracord and up to the knit ends.
ReplyDeleteYou could do it like you mentioned with looping onto the clip first at the center of one long strand, then doing a few snake knots, but when you go to knit over each cord, it could get awkward working the knit part all the way up to the snake knotted section since the spool would be in the way.
If you leave out the break-away, you can make the spool knit over one long strand, then bring the ends together to finish with looping around the clip and snake knot around those cords back to the knit finish.
Great ideas. I've been looking for some sort of break away. I used to use plastic auto fuse holders for a breakaway.
ReplyDeleteOne suggestion... you want the break away to be down below your neck on one of the sides... NOT behind your neck. If it's needed, this location makes it much safer and much easier for the breakaway to uh.. break away. I know it's not symmetrical, but it is MUCH safer.
What size is the black cord? and how are the ends of the black secured to keep it from sliding on the green?
ReplyDelete@Anonymous, on this version I ran a needle and thread through the 2mm diameter black cord ends and the paraord to sew it in place.
ReplyDeleteOn other versions I've run the cord ends through the center of the paracord snake knot, finish with an overhand knot, and the snake knot is tightened over it, keeping it secure.
