Star Grommet...

Stuart Grainger's book, 'Creative Ropecraft' has instructions for a Star Grommet, which is derived from the Drummer Boy's Plait.

I tied the Drummer Boy's Plait(monkey braid/chain sinnet), then wrapped that around a 2 liter bottle cap, joined the ends, doubled the knot, and tightened it to finish.

I may try using it like a finger loop paracord lanyard.  In smaller diameter cord, I think it looks nice enough to wear as a pendant...

The lanyard/fob example is shown with a Kershaw Nerve pocket knife.

  1. That looks really cool. It would be a neat way to attach a carry strap to a canteen or water bottle. I'm gonna give this one a try.

    Thanks for posting!

  2. SD, I spent all day going threw all of your blogs from start to present and I was wondering if you could tell me on the sept. 2009 blog what did you use to do the turk head bracelet on and how did you hide the working end and standing end? I realize you are a very busy man, any help would be great. you are my knot tying hero. Love everything you do. Thank you Scot

  3. @smet337, With Turk's head knots, I usually tuck/pull the start and finish ends under/inside then back out of the knot, tighten the knot, trim and melt the exposed ends, then tuck them back inside and out of sight with the tip of the hemostats or tool(clay stylus/awl) used as a marlinspike.

If I think they need further securing, I can use a tiny bit of super glue, or sew the ends in place with needle/thread.

If it's a Turk's head knot bead, I melt or glue the ends in place on the inside of the knot.

  6. In the picture with it tied around the bottle cap - what is the name and type of cord you are using there ? I am looking for some smaller paracord about that size and can't find any. Thanks SD!

  7. @Anonymous, That cord is braided nylon 2.4mm rope/trot line/mini blind string from ebay seller 'mowfugger'. Link is in my links list.

You might also try 'Type I' paracord/accessory/dummy cord from the Supply Captain, also in the links list. ;)

  9. I do not have a tutorial for this project, having followed the linked book's instructions. You might try one of JD's (TIAT) tutorials. ;)
