Lanyard knot fob...

I put a lanyard knot fob on this Spyderco pocket knife, with green Coleman brand utility cord from walmart, then went over that with some 1.4mm black cord in a long 2 bight turks head knot.

  3. The first part of this 'long 4 bight tutorial' shows a 'long 2 bight' being made first, before it's raised up to a 4 bight.

You can make a 2 bight turks head knot as long as you want by just making any odd number of wraps first: 3, 5, 7, 9, and on up, etc... wrapped up, over all crossing points down, over all up, then under/over back down to complete a first pass. That's how I figured out how to do the wrap on the walking cane.

  4. your knots are so intricate and ornate. you must have a lot of knives and other things to keep tying those knots around :) keep up the great work!

  5. Two nights ago I was watching "Independence Day" and practicing knots with 3/8ths" poly-nylon cord. Started out with a 5-loop round mat with 4 passes. For no particular reason, I put the knot on top of my head. The mat said to me "I'm a hat."

Last night I finished the hat--two round mats on the top (one nested inside the other), then three turksheads lashed together (blue, then white, then blue again, each just a bit larger as they came down the sides of my head). It cracks me up--now I have a hat made of 3/8ths" poly-nylon cord. It looks great! (Let me know if you'd be interested in seeing a picture of it.)

Most people just pick up a pair of knitting needles and some yarn. I'd rather tie knots.

I'm very pleased to find your blog through Amazon, when I was checking out Ashley's. If you have a moment to email, could you tell me if there's one or two books of knots you favor most?

  6. Sure, I'd like to see what you've made. I used to have an email listed on here, but the spam bots were buggin' me, so it's not posted. You can send photos to: Stormdrane at hotmail dot com.

A couple of books that I've used often are Stuart Grainger's 'Creative Ropecraft' and 'The Book of Decorative Knots' by Peter Owen.

You might also give the Knot Heads World Wide website a visit. Great tutorials and photo galleries to look through, along with links, references, and discussion forums. Lots of folks there know more about knot work than I ever will and they're glad to help with questions and sharing information about knots.

  8. SD...didn't know where to post this question, so am here. I found on firemountaingems.com 'waxed cotton' cord in various thicknesses. It's also available in local stores.

Have you used it? Can you use any kind of cord as long as it's not too stiff?

  9. I've used some waxed cotton cord that I found on ebay(plenty of colors-search for '2mm waxed cotton cord'), and it works fine for knot projects.

The difference compared with synthetic cords(nylon/poly), is that it's usually not as strong(not a big deal for lanyards/fobs) and you can't melt the ends for certain projects(like paracord bracelets),but glue works fine in those instances or even a needle and thread.
