Comparison photo of the Perma Lok Lacing Needles that I sometimes use with knot work.
My knot tying friend, Manny, recently sent me the longer Super Jumbo needle, and
the other two smaller ones shown I've been using for years now.
I use the smallest(#1193-01) for 0.9mm and 1.4mm diameter cord, the Jumbo(#1193-02) for 1.8mm, 2mm, 2.4mm, and paracord.
The Super Jumbo(#1193-05) is just slighter larger in diameter than the
Jumbo, both still requiring paracord be cut at an angle/point for the
end to fit/screw on tight.
All the various homemade lacing needles are cool, but I always find myself going back to using the Perma
Lok needles simply because they work best, for me...
I agree with your choice of needles. It doesn't take long to get tired of trying to do nice paracord work without them. I haven't tried the jumbo, but it looks like it's going on my list.
ReplyDeleteStormdrane, do you know if there is another size needle in between these two you mention here below?? If there is...... do you happend to know what item (needle) number is?
ReplyDeleteNo doubt, that having the right needle (tool) for some of the knot work (hitching) it's imperative. I learned this the hard way. I now use the home made needles I made when I am working with thicker cord than paracord, For example: like when I make the "Sailors Cross Knot" or when I do other type of hitching work to cover an item. If you have one kind of needle for all your knot work; it can get very painful in your hands when you are pulling, pushing, twisting, etc., etc., through your work. :-)
Peace,
Manny.
I use the smallest(#1193-01) for 0.9mm and 1.4mm diameter cord, the Jumbo(#1193-02) for 1.8mm, 2mm, 2.4mm, and paracord
@Manny, I've used the lok-eye(came with leather kit), regular, Jumbo, and Super Jumbo Perma Lok needles, but don't know if Tandy ever made other sizes of the brass lacing needles. Here's their current online catalog page link of what they offer.
ReplyDeleteI use a sail needle that takes (normal) paracord.
ReplyDeleteSure, it's a lot sharper than a perma lok, but I don't have to fiddle around to get the cord to fit.
Hey guys! Storm...LOVE THE SITE...you are amazing brother! Just a quick question, I want to start getting into the small permalok work with the 1.4 mm cord. Where can I get it? Would Hobby Lobby or Michaels carry the stuff? Or is there a good online site? Thanks guys!
ReplyDelete@Christopher, There are links in my blog's links list for sources with 1.4mm sized cord: mowfugger on ebay, fixmyblinds.com, GPJ Rope, R&W Rope
ReplyDeleteJust a heads up Storm, I got the small perma-lok needle (3/32 to 1/8) from Tandy at Hobby Lobby for $1.77
ReplyDeleteI just recently got all three lacing needles from the Tandy Leather Factory for $3.09 including shipping!!! Found code 1kRet-CR-12 which is good for $10 off of your order and doesn't expire until September 2013. With all three needles adding up to just under $10, all you pay for is shipping which they sent via USPS to me and adjusted the shipping charge appropriately. Hope this info helps others get the lacing needles they may need.

I just made 2 x perma locking needles from some titanium bar I had laying about, it polished up so well and is incredibly easy to grind a point due to its wear resistance....
ReplyDeletetake a looky
