I have just bought a book called "Decorative Knot Craft" by Kim Sang Lan.. I have completed a Dragon Fly from the book and have several other projects that I want to be but I have a problem that I hope you can help me with... I need a supplier of smaller card.. all of my work has been in Paracord so far.. I would like some 2mm and smaller cord in several colors, the book mentions viscose cord? Do you know of some good suppliers?

Thanks..

Thanks guys. :)

John,
I'm not familiar with 'viscose cord'. For smaller diameter cord, you can contact R&W Rope Warehouse. They're not set up to sell online, but you can call them((800) 260-8599) and tell them what you're looking for, their 'Handy Hundred' cord for decorative knotting, and they'll be glad to help.

You can also google 'mini blind cord' and find sources for different sizes/colors of cord. I've not tried it myself, but it does look like good nylon/polyester braided cord. If you find some online that you think you might like, ask the seller/company for some samples, they might just send you some short pieces, so you can get an idea if it'll work or not.

I bought some paracord for camping and stuff and I found your blog. I made a lanyard and now I'm hooked. I never thought I would be into this stuff but I love it. Your blog is awesome, thanks for all the time you put into it. I can't wait to see whats next.

Hi Stormdrane,
I have a question that it totally unrelated to this particular project although I will say I love it.
I'm trying to hard to get the Turk's Head and Monkey Fist knots down pat. I'm actually doing better with the Monkey Fist since I started slowing down. But TH is still giving me fits. I can do the really really simple one. In Budworth's "TCBofDK" I like the illustrations but I have a question...what about the back? When you look at his intructions all of the patterns are drawn from the front...when you've completed the basic knot do you just spread out the whole thing around the object? Or am I supposed to know what to do to the back. I still don't understand the terminology of bights and leads. And that 16 x 3 thing is a nightmare! But I'll get it eventually. I hope. I'd appreciate any help you can offer.

When I first tried the turks head knots, the diagrams had me confused at first too, as I wondered about the 'back' side.

What happens is, that the work will spread out after you've completed the first pass following those instructions. It's important to leave that first pass loose enough and with enough slack, to straighten/spread it out, and have enough room to make however many additional passes you intend to make.

Don't try to make it tight from the start. Most of the time spent on a turks head knot is working the slack out and tightening it up to finish.

You can spread it out yourself after the first pass or it'll tend to do it itself(on the smaller ones) as you follow the original lead when you make more passes/turns.

There's a good explanation of the knot terms on the KHWW site.
