Snake Belly Bar Paracord Bracelet with a Side Release Buckle

JD of TIAT's most recent video tutorial on YouTube, is for the 'Snake Belly Bar'.

I added a side release buckle to make one as a paracord bracelet, using about 9 feet of paracord, 4.5' each of black and tan, with a 5/8" curved/contoured side release buckle. A finished 9.25" length made a comfortable fit for my 8.5" wrist.

After looping both lengths of paracord onto one end of the buckle, follow the tutorial to tie the knot for the desired length, then run the paracord strands around the other buckle end, tucking the center strands into the under side of the knotwork with hemostats, and make a square knot with the outer strands around the cords, also tucking the ends into the under side knot work to finish.

I tried switching up the pattern a bit, with the different colors on either side, instead of one centered and the other outside, and hitching the inside cords around the outer instead of the opposite, as shown in the video. The result is a wider and flatter pattern...

Also suitable as a watchband or dog/cat pet collar...

  1. Great work, SD! Thanks for the share.

I made my own snake belly bracelet the day JD posted that video! I made it with black and foliage green and it looks very sweet, but I closed it off in a different way. I just made a square knot with doubled end around the other clasp of the buckle. I then just trimmed and melted the ends, but it is a bit fat and obtrusive and much less trim than your model. I'll do it like that next time!

    Thanks, again!

  2. a thought occurred to me..you should be able to take 2 monkey fist's and braid or tie them together to make a bola..think I might try that one eventually. first though...I need to hit the craft store to see if they've got those buckles so I can try my hand at the bracelets. :)

  4. Can you make a tutorial of how to make an alt half hitch bracelet like AngryRobot sells on ebay? Here's an example. Please help me out.

  5. @Anonymous: I posted on that a couple of years back, it's called a double tatted bar or alternate ring hitching. Look in the comments section of this linked blog post for a series of process photo links.

You just loop your cord onto a side release buckle, measure length, around other buckle end and start knotting as shown in the photo links...

  6. Hi SD,

First time commenter. Recently found your site and am loving it. I've already made several of the Solomon's Bar bracelets. I modified mine so the entire bracelet (including the core) uses just one strand. I finish it up with a two-strand matthew walker knot.

Anyway, I'd like to make a few bracelets that can be unraveled very quickly. So far I'm seeing the design for the slatt's rescue belt. Are there any other's you'd recommend?

  7. You can also use a chain sinnet for a paracord bracelet, that pulls apart quickly.

  8. TIAT has a few variations that you can also try.

  9. Hey Stormdrane! I am very interested in making this bracelet, but i am not very fond of side release buckles. What other ways are there of closing this bar off? Thank you!

  10. @JMan, instead of buckles, loops and knots can be used, or loops with beads or buttons. You start whatever type of bracelet with a loop and finish with the other closure choice...

  11. I'm still confused on how to start and end this bracelet using a 5/8" buckle. Is there a way you could help me out by posting pics on how you started it and tucked the ends? It would be very much appreciated. From Covington,Georgia.

  12. @Anonymous, The two strands are just ring/cow hitched onto one buckle end from the center of those lengths of cord, either side by side, or one color centered and the other just hitched with the strands on the outside of the centered color, as shown in the photos.

Finishing is done by taking the four working strands around the other buckle end, and tying a square knot with the outer pair around all the other strands, next to where you stopped tying the bracelet pattern.

All the end strands are then tucked into the knot work on the under side of the bracelet, out of sight.

The example in this post shows the same type of finish.

  13. in that last picture is there a tutorial on how to do the bracelet on the left??

  14. I didn't make a tutorial for that one, just a brief description from the blog post, so if you see how the snake belly bar is tied, you'd set up the cords attached to the side release buckle and work the strands as I described in the post, and hitch them differently to get that pattern. ;)
