Braided Leather Lanyard...

I started with two 5 foot lengths of 2mm dark brown round leather cord, centers of the cords looped over the snap hook/swivel clip, tied a lanyard knot with two strands and the other two through the center of it.

Tied a 4 strand round braid for about 14 inches, made a single crown sinnet at the end of the round braid, putting the Niteize S-Biner through the crown sinnet.

Then continued the crown sinnet back up around the round braid for about 1.5 inches and finished with a crown and wall knot, tucking the ends back down into the knot before trimming off the excess.

The Swiss Army knife is a Wenger Evogrip 18.

I'd done another with paracord last year, but figured one in leather would be a little different...

Where do you get leather supplies?

I bought the leather that I used at a local Michaels craft store, but the same type can be found on Amazon.com and other online sources.

Love the design! Do you have a blog entry for the para-cord version? This links to pics and I was hoping for a more intel (I'm a beginning knothead and wanted to do this for my Scout knife). Thanks!

Mr. Drane-
I'm not accustomed to doing this but this is a fan letter. I've been reading your blog for several months and I just wanted to tell you how grateful I am for your help in furthering my knot tying addiction. It doesn't hurt that you seem to be a genuinely good guy- Somebody I could trust to watch my back. Just glad you are back and not in the slam ;-)

@Robert, I did not do a blog post on the paracord version. Someone on EDC Forums had asked me what knots to use after seeing a similar one, and I just gave a guess from the photo they supplied.

It's just starting with two 6 foot lengths of cord, looping the centers of the cord onto a snap hook, tying a four strand round braid(diamond/spiral braid), then a crown sinnet at the end of the braid for an attachment(clip, split ring, carabiner, etc).

Then crown sinnets back up over the braid, which is similar to how knotted boat fenders are tied.

And a crown and wall knot(completion stitch) to finish, tucking the ends back into the knot.

For us beginners, found these instructions at Instructables.com very quickly by searching on 'four strand round braid' - http://www.instructables.com/id/How-To-Make-a-Four-Strand-Braided-Leash-From-Parac/

hiya SD. Like anon said..I'm a fan. I've commented before though. I went back a month or 2 ago through your beginning [first 6-12mos worth] entries and found the entry for the double monkey fist. I now tie them for bookmarks. :) 3/4" for the centers for hardcovers and 1/2" marbles for centers for paperbacks. I've discovered a recent good source for marbles by the way. you can get a 150ct box for $5 a box at walmart. about 136 of which are 1/2" the rest are "shooters" 3/4 or 1". I think one of them is a 1 and1/4" inch. I also started using the double fist for keychains. tie one with a 1/2" marble..then slide 3-4 nuts down over the paracord then tie another 1/2" fist. tighten up so the fists are both up tight on the nuts. comes out nice. Probably look better with the nuts painted with some model paint though.

I found your blog when my son asked me to make a monkey fist for his keychain. Then another son saw the paracord and asked for a survival bracelet. I have always made fidgety stuff, I make lots of 4 strand braids, knit compulsively, and have made baskets. The YouTube demos have revived my previously frustrated attempts at knotting. Thanks for such an interesting blog.
