Cool Glow Stuff!

My dad is helping run a golf tournament to help raise money for the ministry he works with(Revelation Celebration Ministry). I've been making some small monkey fist key chain fobs with CoolGlowStuff! glow-in-the-dark cord and various other lanyards as giveaways for the golfers. Here's a few I'd already made. I think they look more like mini volleyballs than golf balls.

Here's a few key chain fobs with some decorative beads made with the glow cord.

I think your right, they do look like golf balls.

You may have mentioned this somewhere else but what size are you using?
How long does it glow for? I was thinking it might make good cord for my tent tie downs around the Cub Scouts.
Thanks!

I used the 3/32" size for the monkey fists. The glow last for hours, I've gone to bed and woke up in the morning and could still see it. It probably would make good tie downs and be visible to avoid tripping if you had a late night need to leave the tent.

I can get the basic shape for the monkey fist but I can't seem to tighten it,is there a trick to this?do you put a ball in the middle of it?

I usually use small marbles, wooden balls, and sometimes ball bearings for the center of the monkey fists. You can also tie a knot at one end of a piece of cord you're using for the fist and use that as the center, or use a wad of paper or plastic.

After you get the basic shape of the fist and put something in the center, you start at one end and gradually tighten it. You work from one end taking just a little bit of slack out and follow it completely thru the fist from one end to the other. You may have to do this several times until you can no longer work any more slack out. It can be slow and time consuming, but it keeps the cord from getting twisted, uneven, overlapping, and tangled. The finished fist should look even all around when finished. Sometimes I mess it up, it's ok, I just untie it and do it over, patience is definately necessary in tying knots.

That is an excellent looking monkey fist. What knot was used to finish it off near the key ring? I've made several monkey fist keychains and never seem to be able to find a good ending. Thanks and take care.

gerry,

I used a hangman's noose to finish the monkey fists.

I apologize for being such a dope. I knew it looked sooooo familiar but I was thinking it was a much more exotic knot. Thank you so much. I really enjoy your blog. Take care.

No problem. I have trouble identifying knots sometimes too. So many of them look similar that it can be difficult, even with having the Ashley Book of Knots as a reference, with it's 3900+ knots, I still can't figure out some just by looking at a photo.
